Original WW2 British Home Front Anti-Hitler Chamber Pot – Crown Devon Fieldings – 1939 “Old Nasty” Poland Satire

This is an original WW2 British Home Front anti-Hitler ceramic chamber pot produced by Crown Devon (Fieldings) of Stoke-on-Trent, dating to 1939 at the outbreak of war. Made in England and boldly decorated, the interior features a caricature of Adolf Hitler positioned deliberately at the base of the bowl, while the rim carries the slogan: “Have This on ‘Old Nasty’ – Another Violation of ‘Poland’” alongside references to “No.1 ‘Jerry’” and Iron Cross motifs. The wording directly references Germany’s invasion of Poland in September 1939, anchoring the piece firmly to the earliest phase of the conflict. Far from being decorative for its own sake, this type of ceramic ware formed part of Britain’s Home Front morale culture. Humour — often sharp, irreverent, and deliberately crude — was an important psychological weapon during the early months of the war. By reducing Hitler to the subject of domestic satire and quite literally something to aim for when one needs to relieve himself, objects like this allowed ordinary households to participate in symbolic defiance from their own homes. Produced by Crown Devon Fieldings, a well-known Staffordshire pottery firm, this piece reflects the speed with which British manufacturers responded to wartime events, translating headlines into consumer goods that reinforced unity and resilience. A striking and unmistakable piece of WW2 British Home Front history, combining propaganda, satire, and everyday life in one object. Full disclosure, it’s not in perfect condition. As the photos show, there is some damage near the handle however, it has been repaired rather well. The crazing to the glaze is not damage but natural ageing, commonly seen on period glazed ceramics. Aside from the repaired damage though, this piece remains in lovely condition and would fit well (and cause a chuckle or two) in any Home Front Collection.
