WW2 German K98 Bayonet – Matching Numbers – Mundlos – 1939 – With Frog

A WW2 German K98 bayonet by Mundlos, dated 1939, offered together with its matching scabbard and frog. This example shows honest service wear throughout but remains a complete and original wartime set. The bayonet retains matching numbers 2245 to both the blade and scabbard. While not a near-mint example, it remains a solid and collectable matching K98 bayonet with an unsharpened blade and a structurally sound frog. Blade The blade remains unsharpened and retains the majority of its original blued finish, finishing into a good tip. One side of the blade shows some light scratches along with very light pitting, which is only really noticeable on close inspection and will be shown clearly in the photographs. The blade carries the matching number 2245, while the spine is dated 39. The reverse side of the blade is maker marked Mundlos. Overall the blade remains in very good condition. Hilt & Grips The dark Bakelite grips are in excellent condition and are secured by their original screw bolts. The flash guard shows no indentations and the rifle retaining button functions correctly. Two Waffenamt inspection stamps are present at the top of the pommel, though these are somewhat worn and difficult to clearly read due to surface wear. The metal fittings have lost their original bluing and now display an aged yellow-bronze toned patina from years of handling and storage. Scabbard The steel scabbard is undented and retains the matching number 2245 at the throat. A Waffenamt inspection stamp is present on the lower ball. The reverse side of the scabbard carries the maker mark Mundlos, though this is now faint due to wear. The throat screw is unfortunately missing. The scabbard has lost its original bluing and now displays the same aged yellow-bronze toned patina seen on the hilt fittings, giving the set a consistent aged appearance. The blade fits the scabbard correctly and snugly as expected from a matching pair. Frog The frog remains structurally excellent with no tears or damage to the leather. All stitching remains intact and tight, and the original four rivets are present. The leather shows age and use but remains solid. Overall A complete matching numbers 1939 Mundlos K98 bayonet showing honest wartime wear, but still remaining in very good condition, with a good unsharpened blade, undented scabbard, and solid frog. Historical Note The K98 bayonet was the standard issue bayonet for the German Karabiner 98k rifle during the Second World War. Produced by numerous makers including Mundlos, these bayonets were issued to German infantry throughout the war and remain one of the most recognisable German edged weapons of the period.
